We deliver unique training programmes, bespoke workshops and special projects in some of the most challenging environments in the world.

We empower people to tell their own stories to make a difference. We have trained soldiers on the front line in Mogadishu to document their own lives. We have set up after school photography clubs in Somalia so children can tell their own stories. We have trained NGOs so they can produce press-ready stories in the field. We have held photography workshops with hundreds of young people. We have held photography exhibitions in London for thousands of visitors. You are welcome to contact us to discuss your project needs.

Smart Stories

Smart Stories is a ground-breaking approach to storytelling that finds incredible stories from the field.

Arete developed Smart Stories to enable people to tell their own stories better using smart phones or point-and-shoot cameras. The Smart Stories workshop has trained over 600 people to use simple photographic techniques to document their stories and share their project work. Everything is recorded by them on their smart phone, guided by Smart Stories techniques. Everyone learns how to create a four-minute multimedia piece that showcases their photographs and audio. We can deliver Smart Stories projects anywhere in the world.

Arete established Photoclub in partnership with UNICEF in 2013, with the aim of enabling children in schools to tell their own stories.

Photoclub has trained more than 700 children and 22 teachers in Africa and London with exceptional and highly creative results. Children learn photography and storytelling skills which empower them to document their lives. The results are incredible. Our afterschool clubs teach children and young people to create multimedia pieces they can be proud of. We enable the ongoing delivery of each Photoclub with a specialist manual for teachers. Our goal is to bring Photoclub to more schools and youth groups throughout the world.
