Media training for charities

Does your charity’s media department need a new direction?

Email us about media training

In a world where tweets and posts can be shared around the globe in a matter of seconds, and fake news lurks around every corner, the ability to maximise your charity’s media impact is more critical than ever before. Arete specialises in providing media training courses for charities, whether you are focussed on international development or work in another area of the charity sector.

Our trainers are award-winning photojournalist, regular Guardian and BBC contributor, and founder of Arete, Kate Holt, and Peter Burdin, the BBC’s former Africa Bureau Chief. Together, they have over five decades of experience with international media.

What our media training courses cover

An example of the content of our media training courses is below, however the day can be tailored to suit your organisational priorities.

– Introductions and a review of your charity’s current media work
– How to write a good press release
– How to pitch a press release
– Solutions journalism, and how it can help raise your media profile
– The power of social media
– Building a community on social media
– How to integrate your press pitches with your charity’s social media
– The power of the still image
– What happens when charities get it wrong
– What other charities in your sector are doing to maximise media impact

Peter and Kate will review your current media work, pointing out strengths and helping you to identify where you could have produced stronger material. You will be taken through examples of good press releases, and discuss the powerful of social media and how to apply it to your work. You will discover how other charities are maximising their media impact, and Kate will take you through how to select powerful images for your press work.

We can come to you

Whether you are based in London or not, we can work with you in your office, or if you’d prefer a change of environment, we are happy to travel to another location for an away-day style workshop.

For charities that are not based in the UK, we are able to travel to you or to arrange training space in London. Get in touch to discuss your specific needs and to request a price estimate. The costs for the workshop will reflect the needs of the training.

“Thank you again for a lively and interesting workshop today. It was really useful for us to get your range of perspectives on our media work and challenge the way we present ourselves.” – Tracy, Head of Global Media at an international aid charity

If you’re aiming to increase your charity’s media profile, get in touch to see how we could help you tell your story.
