Our impact – Opportunity International

In September of 2017, Arete partnered with Opportunity International to capture the charity’s work with famers, and in particular female farmers, in rural Ghana.

Through their Saving Circles project, Opportunity International provides small loans to farmers, enabling them to buy inputs that can increase their production, and break the cycle of poverty. Arete photographer Kate Holt travelled to Ghana and worked with a video crew based in Accra to meet with some of the people that Opportunity International has helped. During their trip to the North of Ghana, they met Leila, a member of her community group’s bank loan scheme to help with her farm.

Leila’s story struck a chord with the Opportunity International team, and it was chosen to front their Roots of Change christmas appeal, in partnership with UKaid.

The response to the appeal exceeded expectations, becoming Opportunity International’s most successful appeal to date. The appeal attracted coverage from City AM, Mumsnet, BBC Radio 4 and across ClearChannel networks, achieving over 65 million opportunities to view.

In addition to producing a photo story, we also produced a video for the campaign using some of the photos taken. This video was shown at a Opportunity International fundraising dinner in partnership with City AM, raising over £400,000 in a single night.

“Our appeal finished last week and so far it’s looking like our best yet, raising £7.4 million! It would not have been possible to raise that much without the incredible stories and footage you gathered.” – Jenny, Opportunity International
