According to the 2011 Education for All Report countries affected by war are the furthest from reaching the Education for All goals, yet the challenges faced by their education systems go unreported. As well as undermining economic growth and poverty reduction, conflict reinforces inequalities, desperation and grievances that trap countries in cycles of violence.

Somalia has suffered from twenty years of civil war. The complicated social and political context of Somalia has meant that state intervention in education has been limited and fraught with difficulties. There are many non-formal educational establishments across the country but the quality of education remains poor.

The Somalia Government, with the support of UNESCO and UNICEF held a National Education Conference in Mogadishu between June 18th – 20th to examine the issues facing the education system and to develop a framework for development.

Arete was asked to produce a multi media feature that examined the state of the Education system throughout Somalia. The film was shown at the opening of the National Education Conference for Somalia on June 18th 2013 in Mogadishu.

Both photographs and interviews were used and a shorter film, using only photographs and music was also produced.
