The Arete team works hard to ensure that our operations are sustainable, and have as little impact on the environment as possible.

We place great emphasis on sourcing local talent for our assignments, rather than using costly and polluting methods of transport to fly people from countries like the UK. Not only does this reduce our impact on the environment considerably, it also saves money for our clients, and means that we can find the most powerful stories, using people already familiar with the context in which they are working.

Where possible, we also combine flights to keep costs and environmental impact low – for example, when Arete was contacted by Opportunity International for a project in Mozambique, we allocated Kate Holt, who was already in the country, instantly reducing costs for the organisation.

We also consider the smaller details of our work. We recycle our hard drives, instead of using one for each and every project, meaning that less resources are used on each assignment. When on assignment, we don’t use plastic water bottles – instead, we use LifeStraw products to decontaminate water.
