Adeso – Somalia

Arete sent Karel Prinsloo, a photographer with considerable experience of covering the region, and Alex Pritz, an experienced news videographer, to Somalia to document the work of ADESO and to capture the visit of their Good Will Ambassador Barkhad Abdi in January 2015.

It was the first return visit to Somalia for Barkhad Abdi, who played Muse in the acclaimed movie Captain Philips. ADESO – an African development organization working particularly in Somalia – was keen to publicise his visit.

We worked with closely with Barkhad Abdi and the ADESO communications team to ensure the visit raised awareness of their work and the stories that need to be told, in particular the stories of interest to the Somalia diaspora living in the US and Europe, so that they could gain a better understanding of the current situation in Somalia.

We produced a two-minute film of the visit and sent photographs as press hand-outs to the international wire services.

We worked hard to ensure take up of the story by multiple global outlets and gained fantastic coverage for the incredible work Adeso does with fishing communities in Somalia.

The photographs were picked up widely by international news agencies and were featured in an article about the trip published by Newsweek and a news story that went out on Yahoo.

The film has been shared 35,000 times on YouTube.

Somali-American actor, Barkhad Abdi, left Somalia when he was seven years old and returned for the first time for a visit to the country as an Adeso Goodwill Ambassador. In the 23 years since Somalia descended into civil war, the country's waters have been exploited by illegal fisheries, and the economic infrastructure that once provided jobs has been ravaged. Too often, there is no way for young men with limited education to provide for themselves or their families, and many turned to piracy. Although this has decreased in recent years, unless young men in Somalia are provided with appealing livelihood opportunities, there is a chance that they could revert back to piracy.
