Arete worked with the UN FAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation) in Somalia to highlight the severe drought affecting the Horn of Africa using photography, film and audio.
Photographer Karel Prinsloo travelled to Somalia numerous times to document the situation, and FAO’s work to avert large-scale famine in the region. Karel’s photos have been used widely on social media and in print communications by the organization.
Using Karel’s photographs and stories gathered in the field, Jessica Monson produced a number of multimedia slideshows that highlight the challenges facing Somalis in rural areas, as well as the work being done by FAO to support their livelihoods.
In May, FAO commissioned Arete’s video team to produce a 2 minute campaign film to show their recent successes and increase their supporter base. Working with archival footage and Karel’s photos, the film highlights the situation of rural people living in the hardest hit areas of Somalia, and demonstrates FAO’s expansive efforts to preserve the livelihoods of nomadic pastoralists across the country by protecting their livestock against disease and starvation.
