The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Somalia asked Arete to produce content to demonstrate how FAO were supporting communities in Somalia prepare for the impact of drought. The region was facing a 70% likelihood of La Niña drought conditions lasting into 2025 with an estimated 3.8M internally displaced people (IDPs) across the country who would be directly impacted.
FAO wanted to showcase the resilience and determination of Somali communities working to build preparedness and adapt to climate challenges through creating a film that underscored the critical importance of proactive measures to mitigate the devastating impacts of climate extremes.
Arete’s team in Somalia gathered photographs, stories and video interviews in several remote locations to highlight the challenges faced by communities. Arete scripted and edited a film from the content and included animation to support the narrative.
The film showcases local efforts to implement sustainable agricultural practices, improve water management, and strengthen early warning systems, ensuring communities are better equipped to face future droughts.
The film and material were released ahead of COP28.
By bringing these stories to the global stage, Arete’s film and photography amplified the urgent need for international support and action, highlighting the pivotal role of anticipatory approaches in building long-term resilience against climate-related shocks.
